Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India functioning under the aegis of Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Government of India. The main activities of BIS include formulation of Indian Standards (ISs), Product Certification (ISI Mark), System Certification, Hallmarking of Gold and Silver Artifacts, Laboratory Testing, imparting training both nationally and internationally, creating awareness among common consumers, organizing Educational Utilization programmes for students and nodal point for WTO-TBT(World Trade Organisation – Technical Barriers to Trade) in India. Recently Compulsory Registration of Electronic and Information Technology Goods is also being implemented by BIS. It is also proposed to include around 19000 items in the conformity assessment scheme. Mostly students in Engineering Colleges do refer to the Indian Standards during their course and may have to refer them in their future endeavors while they work for an industry, establish an industry or in their Central/State Government job. The programme included 3 hour session followed by lunch on 11 Dec 2015.
